From the Front Lines: Tackling Opioid Misuse in Maryland

In response to the continued increase in opioid-related fatalities in Maryland, the Governor convened the Heroin and Opioid Emergency Task Force and Regional Summits across the state to hear directly from residents about the problems and potential solutions to the opioid epidemic. Additionally, the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene’s Behavioral Health Administration initiated the Opioid Misuse Prevention Program (OMPP) with the goals of reducing prescription opioid and heroin misuse and abuse, reducing opioid related overdoses, and reducing fatalities that occur as a result of opioid overdoses. To gather more community level data, BHA collaborated with the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy to develop and administer the Maryland Public Opinion Survey on Opioids. This session will provide an overview and preliminary reports of the State’s community-based and data-driven efforts to overcome opioids.
