Fun Fact: This Garrett County Destination Once Hosted Albert Einstein

In September 1946, one of the world’s most famous minds sought the same mountain views, fresh air, and relaxation that attract visitors to Deep Creek Lake today.

Albert Einstein, best known for developing the theory of relativity and the iconic equation E = mc², spent two weeks vacationing at Deep Creek Lake in Garrett County. In search of rest, solitude, and relief from health concerns, the renowned scientist exchanged the spotlight for the beauty of Maryland’s largest freshwater lake.

The getaway was arranged by John Steiding, a chemist from nearby Midland, who invited Einstein to experience the beauty of Western Maryland. During his stay, Einstein lodged at a lakeside cottage owned by Dr. Tom Wilson, the physician who was overseeing his care. Far from the lecture halls and scientific debates that defined much of his life, Einstein filled his days reading, strolling along the shoreline, and chatting with locals.

Like many visitors today, Einstein was drawn to the lake itself. Though he never learned to swim, he delighted in sailing and trying his luck at fishing—even if the fish weren’t impressed by his genius. The peaceful scenery and slower pace proved the escape he needed.

Reflecting on his visit, Einstein called Deep Creek Lake “one of the most restful and zestful vacations” he’d ever had.

Nearly eighty years later, travelers continue to find the same respite—famous physicist or weekend visitor alike, Deep Creek Lake remains the perfect spot to slow down and enjoy Maryland’s mountain beauty.
