The Baltimore County Republican Central Committee on May 30 selected State Delegate Nino Mangione as its nominee to fill the vacant District 3 seat on the Baltimore County Council.
Mangione emerged from a field of seven Republican candidates seeking the appointment. The committee held a public hearing before selecting a nominee to succeed longtime Council Member Wade Kach, who resigned effective May 7 due to health concerns.
Kach represented northern Baltimore County on the County Council for more than 11 years after serving nearly four decades in the Maryland House of Delegates. In announcing his resignation, Kach said health issues that arose after his 2022 reelection campaign made it impossible for him to continue serving.
Mangione has represented portions of Baltimore County in the Maryland House of Delegates since 2019. He was the only applicant for the appointment who was also seeking a County Council seat in this year’s election. Mangione is currently running in the Republican primary for the newly drawn District 5 seat, which includes much of the current District 3.
Under the Baltimore County Charter, the departing council member’s political party selects a nominee to fill a vacancy on the County Council. Because Kach served as a Republican, the Baltimore County Republican Central Committee selected a nominee to fill the seat. The charter directs County Executive Kathy Klausmeier to appoint the committee’s nominee within 30 days of the vacancy.
Mangione would serve the remainder of Kach’s term, which expires in December, restoring full representation to District 3 as the County Council continues work on budget, land use, public safety, and other local issues.
Mangione would serve the remainder of Kach’s term until voters elect a successor in November and the new term begins in December.
