Maryland has launched a major upgrade to its public benefits system, aiming to make it easier and faster for residents to access vital support like food assistance, cash aid, and health coverage.
As reported in the Baltimore Banner, the revamped application portal, now branded as Maryland Benefits, consolidates multiple application processes into a single, user-friendly platform. Residents can now submit their information once and be matched with all the programs they qualify for, including SNAP (food assistance), energy aid, cash assistance, and portions of Medicaid.
Governor Wes Moore announced the new platform in Prince George’s County. From the article:
This application means fewer forms, fewer trips, faster service, more support for families that need it most when they need it most, said Governor Wes Moore.
Previously, residents had to navigate multiple online forms to apply for different types of benefits. The new system reduces that burden significantly, reporting applying for all programs now takes less than half the time it once took to apply for food assistance alone. More than 22,000 Marylanders have already used the new site since its quiet launch two weeks ago.
Offered in English and Spanish and optimized for both computers and phones, the Maryland Benefits website is part of a broader modernization effort. The Maryland Department of Information Technology (DoIT) now oversees the technical infrastructure, freeing up human services and health officials to focus on policy and program delivery. The application already includes Medicaid enrollment options for older adults and people with disabilities. Officials plan to expand it soon to include enrollment for low-income individuals and those needing long-term care.
