Maryland’s economic future isn’t one-size-fits-all. Counties are driving innovation and resilience beyond just the tech sector. From rural revitalization to workforce wins, local input is key to inclusive growth.
Maryland’s economy is as diverse as its geography, from rural farming communities and coastal towns to bustling suburban centers and urban innovation hubs. Yet economic development strategies can lean heavily on high-tech growth, overlooking the wide range of industries and local assets that drive prosperity in counties across the state. As economic pressures shift, with changing workforce needs, aging infrastructure, rising costs of living, and evolving commercial corridors, county governments are uniquely positioned to advocate for strategies that reflect on-the-ground realities.
Description: Economic development in Maryland must go beyond the tech sector to reflect the full range of opportunities and challenges facing local communities. From revitalizing enterprise zones to supporting small businesses, workforce development, and infrastructure, counties play a key role in shaping policies that drive sustainable, inclusive growth. This panel will explore how local governments can inform state-level economic development strategies, leverage policy tools to strengthen their economies, and ensure that investments reach diverse industries and communities across Maryland.
