Westernport, Maryland, is recovering from a historic flood on May 13, 2025, that caused significant damage to the Allegany County Library System’s Westernport Branch.

The flood destroyed the library’s entire collection, technology equipment, and furniture, leaving this vital community hub in need of recovery support. Although Federal Flood Insurance covers the library, it unfortunately does not cover the full scope of damage or replacement costs.

The library system has launched a donation campaign through GiveButter to help replace what was lost and restore the building for public use. This effort is not just about books and bricks—it’s about rebuilding a safe, welcoming place that serves as a vital resource for education, connection, and opportunity in the Westernport community.

How Counties Can Help!

There are a number of meaningful ways counties can be of assistance to the Westernport Library:

• Donate Items: Contribute gently used or surplus items, such as shelving, seating, office supplies, or tech equipment like monitors, printers, or tablets.
• Coordinate With County Libraries: Local library systems can assess whether they have duplicate or retired materials that could be donated to rebuild the Westernport Branch’s collection.
• Promote the Effort: Share the donation page through county communications channels, social media accounts, and newsletters to help raise awareness.
• Engage Local Partners: Work with local businesses, community organizations, and schools to encourage contributions or organize donation drives.

Public libraries are essential infrastructure, especially in small towns.
