St Mary’s Museum Division Launches Creative Childcare Support Program

As local governments look for creative ways to serve residents and maximize resources, St. Mary’s County Museum Division is rolling out a program offering educational enrichment, childcare support, and economic benefits.

The Junior Historian Program at Piney Point Lighthouse Museum is more than just a fun spring break activity for kids—it’s a win for the community members, local tourism, and the county budget. Designed for children aged 7 to 10, the program provides a structured, hands-on learning experience while school is out, helping parents avoid taking time off work while introducing young learners to local history and nature.

“Because Piney Point has so many interesting things for kids to explore, we thought it would be great to continue to offer this fun, yet educational, multiday Junior Historian program for children to take part in while off school for spring break this year,” says Karen Stone, Manager of the St. Mary’s County Museum Division. “With such a broad range of topics, they’re sure to find lots of fun things to do while enjoying the outdoors at the lighthouse.” – County Press Release.

By leveraging the Piney Point Lighthouse Museum’s unique setting, St. Mary’s County is providing a valuable service for families and driving more engagement with a key cultural site—a boost for local tourism and economic activity.
