Maryland Destination Marketing Organizations (DMOs) lead the way in showcasing all Maryland has to offer to our residents and visitors from other states.
At MACo’s Winter Conference, a distinguished panel highlighted the vital role of Maryland’s DMOs in the state’s economic growth. With a focus on innovative infrastructure projects and a strong commitment to enhancing visitor experiences, these organizations are helping elevate Maryland as a premier destination for residents and out-of-state travelers.
The Honorable Jefferson Ghrist, Delegate Maryland General Assembly welcomed these panelists for the Foundations of Innovation: Boosting Local Economies Through Tourism session:
- Howard County Executive, the Honorable Dr. Calvin Ball
- Liz Fitzsimmons
- Clint Sterling
- Sandy Turner
Howard County Executive Ball emphasized the importance of tourism to Maryland’s local economies, noting that “travel and tourism are an integral part of our economy.” In 2023, Howard County saw an impressive $800 million in spending from 3.1 million visitors. These visitors support local businesses, from small shops and restaurants to cultural events and attractions, creating a ripple effect that benefits communities across the state.
Liz Fitzsimmons, Managing Director, Office of Tourism and Film, Maryland Department of Commerce, discussed the top five differentiators for tourism in Maryland: Underground Railroad sites, Chesapeake Bay Loop/Beaches, Maryland’s Trail System, Scenic byways, and Fish & Hunt Maryland. These features not only attract visitors but also serve to preserve the state’s rich history and natural beauty. In 2023, Maryland welcomed 45.1 million visitors who spent $20.5 billion, proving tourism’s significant impact on the state’s economy.
Clint Sterling, Director of Recreation, Parks & Tourism for Somerset County, provided an update on the county’s 13-mile bike trail project. Once completed, this trail will provide residents and recreational tourists with a new way to explore the area, further boosting local tourism and promoting outdoor activities.
Sandy Turner, Tourism Manager for Cecil County, discussed the impact of the Maryland 5 Star at Fair Hill – an equine
event that continues to grow in popularity. The event, which features dressage, cross country, and show jumping competitions, attracted $11 million in direct spending in 2023. This event demonstrates the ability of niche attractions to drive significant economic benefits for the state.
By continuing to invest in tourism infrastructure and unique attractions, Maryland is positioning itself as a destination that offers diverse experiences for travelers. From scenic byways and historical landmarks to outdoor recreations and world-class events, Maryland DMOs ensure that the state remains a top destination for residents and visitors from across the country.
