Angela Alsobrooks officially resigned as Prince George’s County Executive on Monday, December 2, 2024, after winning a seat in the US Senate.

Chief Administrative Officer Tara Jackson will serve as acting County Executive until voters decide who will complete the remainder of Alsobrooks’ term through a special election.

The County Charter sets specific timelines for this process:

  • Primary Election: 35 to 90 days after the vacancy announcement, with dates likely falling between Tuesday, January 7, and Tuesday, March 4, 2025.
  • General Election: 14 to 63 days after the primary, with dates likely falling between Tuesday, March 18, and Tuesday, May 6, 2025.

Governor Wes Moore praised Alsobrooks’ tenure as county executive:

I want to thank Angela Alsobrooks for her dedicated service to the people of Prince George’s County for the past six years as county executive. Angela worked tirelessly to make Prince George’s County a safer, stronger place to call home—we’re deeply grateful for her effort and for the results she achieved.

We look forward to continuing our work together to uplift Maryland families, protect fundamental freedoms, and build a brighter future for our state in her new role as U.S. Senator, as we welcome the opportunity to continue to serve the people of Prince George’s County alongside acting County Executive Tara Jackson.

Election officials will finalize and announce the dates, polling locations, and other logistical details soon.
