The Interagency Commission (IAC) on School Construction met to discuss new and existing school construction projects across several jurisdictions as fiscal pressure mounts in school districts throughout the state.
During the most recent meeting of the IAC on School Construction leaders met to discuss increases in school construction needs and the resource limitations of the commission. Executive Director Alex Donahue briefed the membership on the financial gaps local education agencies are facing even beyond construction needs, noting that the financial pressures may be as great as the committee has ever seen.
These concerns have come to the commission’s attention during a number of recent meetings that IAC leadership has held with local governments and school systems. This outreach is part of a broader effort to understand the challenges jurisdictions are facing particularly as Blueprint implementation continues. Facility modifications and additions in many instances have been necessitated by mandates from both the Built to Learn Act and the Blueprint law. Adjusting the timelines of various projects has been an avenue for some short-term fiscal relief but does not address the growing need today for more projects.
