The promotion ceremony took place on Monday, November 11, at the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historical Park on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, recognizing Tubman’s legacy and contributions to freedom and justice.
I could not think of a more appropriate day — a day to lift up one of the greatest Marylanders we have ever seen, one of the greatest patriots this country has ever seen — than to have a day where we are going to honor and lift up and commission Harriet Tubman to be a general – Maryland Gov. Wes Moore.
In addition to leading enslaved people to freedom, Harriet Tubman made crucial contributions to the Union Army during the Civil War. She served as a nurse, tending to wounded soldiers, operated as a spy, gathering valuable intelligence, and even led raids on plantations, directly supporting the Union’s efforts.

Brickhead added that Tubman was an exceptional land navigator, physically fit, a skilled scout, resilient, and a clear leader—qualities that would place her in the top 1% of recruits in today’s Maryland National Guard. Given her remarkable contributions and character, promoting her to General felt like a fitting tribute to the significant role she played.
Tina Wyatt, Tubman’s great-great-great-grandniece was in attendance at the ceremony to receive the medal on her behalf.
