Maryland State Department of Education Releases Student Proficiency Test Results

Modest gains in reading and mathematics scores from Maryland’s most recent standardized testing, State Superintendent calls for urgently accelerating progress.

A recent press release from the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) highlighted final results of the Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP). The numbers show modest improvement statewide in English language and arts (ELA) and mathematics scores. The rates show a .5 percent increase in ELA results bumping up to 48.4 from 47.9 percent. Mathematics results showed a .8 percent increase, going from 23.3 to 24.1 percent in proficiency.

“It is clear that we must accelerate gains urgently for students across Maryland,” said Dr. Carey M. Wright, State Superintendent of Schools. “This is not just about proficiency rates on statewide assessments. A comprehensive approach is needed to meet our goals of ensuring that all students are ready for college, career and life.”

Recently MSDE launched a $6.85M, four-year philanthropic partnership with the nonprofit Ibis Group to increase literacy outcomes statewide. Additionally they have mandated the implementation of Science of Reading in all public schools and are exploring a new policy that has the potential to hold back third graders for a year who have not met the standard to move on to fourth grade.
