MD Transportation Authority Launches Work Zone Safety Program in Cecil County

The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) becomes the first agency to implement the new use of unmanned speed cameras in work zones following the passage of HB 513.

The 2024 legislative session saw the passage of HB 513 – Maryland Road Worker Protection Act of 2024. Spearheaded by Lieutenant Governor Miller, this bill allows traffic safety agencies latitude to use speed camera enforcement in areas where work zones have been established. The bill extended this authority to counties but only on local roads with speed limits of 45 miles per hour or more.

No local work zone cameras have been installed to date and they are anticipated to be used only as needed. MACo supported this legislation as an opportunity to protect county workers who operate on and around the roadways daily. Bus drivers, officers, construction workers, planners, and engineers can now go to work knowing that more protections can be put in place to keep them safe.

Concerns around roadway safety have been increasing over the last couple of years. The 2024 MACo Summer Conference panel, “Pump the Brakes: Addressing Maryland’s Traffic Fatality Crisis,” will host an esteemed panel of experts to explore how it got so bad, what the research shows, and what kind of solutions will truly make Maryland roads safer.

MACo’s Summer Conference, “Turning the Tide,” is August 14-17, 2024, at the Roland Powell Convention Center in Ocean City, Maryland.
