Dominic Butchko, three years into service as part of the MACo policy team, will take on external duties to build relationships within the county community, especially among their Annapolis-facing endeavors, and with State agencies who interact with county leaders and services.
MACo is pleased to announce the increased role and responsibility for Mr. Butchko, who joined the MACo staff in the summer of 2021. He has covered a policy portfolio including land use and environmental issues, transportation and public works, and parks & recreation topics. He will remain an active player on the MACo policy team, along with new bridge-building responsibilities.
Mr. Butchko has also served as the lead for MACo’s Land Use Subcommittee, which reviews and makes recommendations on legislation dealing with planning and zoning, solid waste, recycling, and environmental stewardship. He has worked closely with the Rural County Coalition through their efforts to review legislation for specific rural county effects, and to develop content for their meetings during MACo conferences.
“Dom has put a real stamp on his issues in his time here,” said MACo Executive Director Michael Sanderson, “and I know he can help MACo’s efforts to coordinate and collaborate with other players in the public sphere. We want to represent and serve our counties well, and he’s a part of our plan to keep improving there.”
MACo and its member counties are frequently asked for input on pending legislation, and Mr. Butchko will help to improve the coordination of that process across MACo’s member jurisdictions, the MACo staff, and the General Assembly’s nonpartisan staff agency. Further Mr. Butchko will have a lead role in cementing stronger ties with the policy leaders in State agencies who focus on the Annapolis legislative process, to foster earlier and stronger communications on opportunities and challenges that lie ahead for county services subject to State regulations, oversight, and influence.
Mr. Butchko has a M.A. in Public Management from Johns Hopkins University, and a B.A. in Political Science from Wilkes University.
