Last week, the Maryland State Firemen’s Association officially changed its name to the Maryland State Firefighters Association (MSFA). For the MSFA, the action recognizes and honors the diverse individuals within its ranks.
Over several years, members engaged in meaningful conversations and debates about the necessity of this change. “Firemen” no longer adequately reflected the diverse individuals serving Maryland communities. Acknowledging the importance of gender-neutral language, the 132nd Annual Convention and Conference officially approved this change.
The MSFA acronym and seal will remain the same. In the coming months, the MSFA will update its Constitution, bylaws, legal documents, websites, and other communication channels, and member companies will receive regular updates to ensure a smooth transition.
