Montgomery County Minimum Wage Increases July 1

On July 1, the minimum wage in Montgomery County will increase to $17.15 for large employers and $15.50 for mid-sized employers.

The minimum wage will again increase in Montgomery County on July 1, 2024. Sponsored by then-County Council member and current County Executive Marc Elrich, Bill 28-17 raises the minimum wage incrementally each July 1.

The law requires the Chief Administrative Officer to adjust the minimum wage yearly after it hits $15 in 2021. The CAO sets the rates based on the consumer price index for all urban wage earners and clerical workers (CPI-W) for Washington-Baltimore.

Starting July 1, the minimum wage rate for large employers (with 51 or more employees) will increase by 45 cents to $17.15 per hour,  a 45-cent increase from the current $16.70/hour. The minimum wage rate for mid-sized employers (with 11-50 employees) will increase by 50 cents to $15.50 per hour. Under State law, the rate for small employers (10 or fewer employees) will remain $15 per hour, effective January 1, 2024.

Tipped employees (earning more than $30 monthly in tips) must earn the Montgomery County Minimum Wage Rate per hour. Employers must pay at least $4.00 per hour. This amount plus tips must, at a minimum, meet the Montgomery County Minimum Wage Rate.

Restaurant employers who use a tip credit are required to provide employees with a written or electronic wage statement for each pay period showing the employee’s effective hourly rate of pay, including employer-paid cash wages plus tips for tip credit hours worked for each workweek of the pay period.
