On February 1, 2024, Associate Policy Director Sarah Sample testified before the House Environment and Transportation Committee in support of HB 107- Vehicle Laws- Bus Lane Obstruction- Monitoring Systems Expansion and Workgroup (Better Bus Service Act of 2024). This bill prohibits specified activities in designated bus lanes and authorizes counties to install bus lane monitoring systems to manage prohibited activities.
Major efforts are being made to bring about transportation equity across Maryland. Without bills like HB 107 the benefits of those stakeholder initiatives will not be realized by residents relying on public transportation to get where they need to go.
With an automated option for enforcing motor vehicle laws and violations, there is great potential to divert costs associated with law enforcement personnel, who would typically be tasked with motor vehicle monitoring. These savings can be reinvested in other areas, while maintaining compliance and safety in neighborhoods via the automated monitoring system.
