Van Hollen Secures $375M for New FBI Headquarters

US Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), Chair of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government (FSGG), announced the inclusion of $375 million in funding for a new FBI Headquarters within the passage of the Committee’s fiscal 2024 funding legislation by the full Senate Appropriations Committee.

The FBI is headquartered in Washington, D.C., in the J. Edgar Hoover Building, with outdated infrastructure and security limitations that raise significant national security concerns, which prompted Congress over a decade ago to investigate the feasibility and need to construct a new consolidated headquarters facility to support information sharing, collaboration, and integration of strategic priorities.

The US General Services Administration narrowed down the options for the new and expanded headquarters to three potential sites. Two possible sites are in Prince George’s County. The other potential site is in Springfield, Virginia.

“After years of working together with agencies across the federal government and members of Team Maryland, our state and local governments, and stakeholders across the region, we’ve finally reached the red zone,” said Senator Van Hollen. “I’m committed to keeping this project on track, and I will continue fighting to deliver the new headquarters that our nation’s law enforcement requires and bring that headquarters to Maryland.”

As previously reported on Conduit Street, MACo joined several federal, state, and county leaders in making the case that Maryland’s proposed sites for the new location of the FBI Headquarters are the most accessible, equitable, and efficient.

From the MACo letter:

Prince George’s County is at the forefront of promoting a more diverse and inclusive economy through a thoughtful and strategic economic development strategy. The County’s highly skilled workforce, easy access to all modes of transportation, proximity to several world class academic and research institutions, and commitment to environmental sustainability, make Prince George’s County the ideal location for the new FBI headquarters.
