NACo Unveils Housing Solutions Matchmaker Tool

Understanding how housing environments vary significantly across the nation, the National Association of Counties unveiled the “Housing Solutions Matchmaker Tool,” a utility intended to help county officials develop policies tailored to their communities.

The tool, launched at NACo’s 2022 Annual Conference and Exposition, will assist officials with understanding their housing market and provide potentially helpful resources and policies to address key challenges. The Brookings Institute and Aspen Institute lent their expertise to develop the matchmaker tool.

The tool provides key metrics by county, including housing costs, population size, housing quality based on vacancies, and comparisons to neighboring counties. Then, depending on a county’s disposition, the tool offers tailored solutions.

In Baltimore City, for example, the tool identifies population loss as a key challenge based on the City’s population metrics. As a result of its findings, the tool offers a set of solutions, including strategies to reduce vacant housing through establishing land banks and demolishing excess housing stock.

A broad overview of NACo’s Housing Solutions Matchmaker Tool is available here. Interested individuals can directly access the tool here.

At MACo’s 2022 Summer Conference, a panel of housing experts will tackle the issue of housing affordability during the breakout session “Let’s Talk Housing: National Problem, Local Solutions.” The panel will explore several issues through a Maryland-centric lens, including labor and supply shortages, skyrocketing interest rates and inflation, the looming eviction crisis, inclusive housing concerns, and equity in transportation access.

The 2022 MACo Summer Conference will be held at the Roland Powell Convention Center in Ocean City, MD, from August 17-20. This year’s theme is “Taking Care of Business.” More information can be found on our conference website.
