Charles Earns National Budget Award, Certificate for Excellence in Financial Reporting

The Charles County Board of Commissioners recognized the Department of Fiscal and Administrative Services for earning the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award and the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA).

This is the 26th consecutive year that the department has received the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award. This award is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental budgeting and represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management.

This is the 19th consecutive year that the department received the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for its annual comprehensive financial report for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2020. The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management.

To receive the award, the County had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for an effective budget presentation that assess how well an entity’s budget serves as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide, and a communications device.

In addition, budget documents must earn a “proficient” rating in all four categories and the fourteen mandatory criteria within those categories.

There are over 1,600 participants in the Budget Awards Program, and the most recent award recipients are posted quarterly on GFOA’s website (www.gfoa.org). Award recipients have pioneered efforts to improve the quality of budgeting and provide an excellent example for other governments throughout North America.
