Little-Known Rental Tax Credit Could Benefit Many Marylanders

With a potential eviction crisis looming, some renters experiencing hardship could be eligible for the little-known Maryland Renter’s Tax Credit Program. Eligible individuals could receive up to $1,000 yearly, or $83.33 per month in the form of a direct check from the State of Maryland.

Eligibility is dependent upon applicants having total assets valued at less than $200,000 and being below certain income thresholds. The credit is available to the following groups:

  • Seniors over 60;
  • Individuals who are permanently disabled;
  • Certain families with dependents under the age of 18;
  • Certain low-income individuals; and
  • Surviving spouses of renters who met the eligibility requirements.
