On January 14, 2021, MACo Legislative Director Kevin Kinnally testified before the Senate Budget and Taxation Committee in opposition of SB 258 – Property Tax Exemption – Disabled Veterans. This bill would expand eligibility for a property tax exemption of a disabled veteran to include veterans with a service-connected disability of at least 80%, which would have a significant fiscal impact on county governments.
MACo does not raise policy objections with this goal – county concerns are merely practical and cost-driven.
From the MACo Testimony:
As the focus shifts to restoring our state and local economies in a manner that is safe, equitable, and prosperous for all, counties welcome the opportunity to work with state policymakers to develop flexible and optional tools to create broad or targeted tax incentives, but resist state-mandated changes that preclude local input.
