Montgomery County Recreation Earns NACo Achievement Awards

naco_star_logo_sqThe National Association of Counties (NACo) has recognized two of Montgomery County Recreation’s (MCR) innovative programs with 2019 Achievement Awards.

The award-winning MCR programs are Senior Planet Montgomery and the Summer Leadership Challenge.

According to a press release:

“These awards highlight the strength and diversity of our programming for youth and seniors at Montgomery County Recreation,” said MCR Director Robin Riley. “I am proud of our creative and hardworking staff’s work that resulted in this recognition.”

Senior Planet Montgomery is a series of weekly free courses and single day lectures that are offered at recreation centers and libraries across Montgomery County to educate seniors about and with digital technology. This program is a collaboration between MCR, the Department of Technology Services and the nonprofit Older Adults Technology Services.

The Summer Leadership Challenge program features interactive workshops that prepare young people for leadership roles and employment. The goal is to empower participants to inspire positive changes within themselves and within their community. During the Summer Leadership Challenge, teenagers establish lasting friendships, develop a sense of responsibility, learn to work effectively in groups, build accountability, and gain the confidence to solve problems independently. Participants also receive an opportunity to earn CPR and First Aid certification and organize a capstone activity that benefits the local community. Summer Leadership Challenge Lifeguarding, a spin-off of the original program, exposes youth to the skills and training necessary to become a certified lifeguard.

The NACo Achievement Awards program seeks to recognize innovative county government programs.
