Adrienne Jones Voted In As New Speaker

Delegate Adrienne Jones, of Baltimore County, has been elected to serve as the new Speaker of the House of Delegates.

jonesFollowing a day filled with twists and turns, Delegate Adrienne Jones – the longtime Speaker Pro Tem, has been selected by her House peers to serve as Speaker. The floor vote came on Wednesday May 1, a few hours after scheduled, but following a unanimous decision by the Democratic Caucus to support Jones for the role.

Jones made history as the first woman and first African American to hold the office. Jones’s election follows the tenure of the late Speaker Michael Busch— an Anne Arundel County Democrat who served as Speaker from 2003 until his passing in April 2019.

Speaker Jones has served in the House of Delegates since 1997, and has served as Speaker Pro Tem since 2003.

Speaker Jones has participated in many MACo conferences and events, and has routinely been an effective advocate for funding issues affecting county governments.
