Charles I. “Chuck” Ecker, Ph.D., former Howard County Executive from 1990-1998, died at age 86.

Current Howard County Executive Allan Kittleman posted the following statement on his facebook page:

Today we are mourning the passing of former Howard County Executive Charles I. “Chuck” Ecker.

Chuck had a long and accomplished career in public service. In addition to his two terms as Howard County executive, he will also be remembered for a lifetime of tireless commitment and steadfast devotion to public education. He served as assistant superintendent and deputy superintendent of the Howard County Public School System. He filled a similar role in Prince George’s County and served for eight years as superintendent of Carroll County Public Schools.

Chuck provided significant leadership and guidance through the years on a wide range of educational issues ranging from modernizing public school facilities, to developing blueprints for quality education and comparable testing methods.

Chuck was an outstanding leader. He led Howard County through some of its most significant years of growth. He helped guide and direct Howard County’s transformation into the county we know it to be today. He was thoughtful, patient, compassionate and most importantly, always a kind and respectful gentleman. He will truly be missed.

I ask you to join me in keeping Chuck’s family in your thoughts and prayers.
