MACo 2012 Summer Conference Session – Evolving County Relationships With Military Presence

Description: Military bases aren’t gated, cryptic complexes cut off from the communities around them. In Maryland, they’ve become vital economic engines, and helping to manage their growth and benefitting from their output has become a job of county government. At Fort Meade, a new Mission Growth Initiative (MGI) is focused on bringing the working staffs of the surrounding jurisdictions together with their installation counterparts to form sustainable joint planning relationships. This effort, which has been described as the “next generation” in community/installation relationships, is being led by the DOD funded Fort Meade Regional Growth Management Committee whose members include Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carol, Howard, Montgomery, Prince George’s, Talbot, and Queen Anne’s Counties. Other efforts are underway around Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Harford County, and the Naval Air Station at Patuxent River in St. Mary’s County. Speakers will discuss these evolving relationships and how local government can benefit from them.

Speakers:

  1. Todd Morgan, St. Mary’s County Commissioner
  2. Kent Menser, Executive Director, Howard County BRAC Office
  3. Michael Bennett, Mayor of Aberdeen
  4. Colonel Edward C. Rothstein, Garrison Commander, Fort George G. Meade
