Dr. Joshua Sharfstein was appointed by the Governor to serve as  the new Secretary of Maryland’s Department of  Health and Mental Hygiene.   His first day on the job was January 12, 2011. Dr. Sharfstein is a graduate of Harvard Medical School and served as Principal Deputy Commissioner for the Food and Drug Administration since 2009.  Prior to that, Dr. Sharfstein served as the Commissioner of Health for the City of Baltimore.  He has been named by Governing Magazine as a Public Official of the Year.
