Sec. Day Talks Moore Housing Package on WBAL

Last week, Housing & Community Development Secretary Jake Day spoke on WBAL about Governor Moore’s recently passed affordable housing package.

In the run-up to the 2024 legislative session, Affordable housing was set to be the hottest topic of the year. For months beforehand, the Maryland Department of Housing & Community Development was busy crafting the three-bill package that would become one of Governor Moore’s top legislative priorities. The Housing and Community Development Financing Act (SB 483/HB 599) sought to maximize state and federal affordable housing investment by creating new tools to take advantage of certain programs and establish new force multipliers. The Renter’s Rights Stabilization Act (SB 481/HB 693) aimed to address the immediate needs of renters who are experiencing housing instability. Finally, the Housing Expansion and Affordability Act (SB 484/HB 538) made several changes to development & land use, including establishing new state density bonuses and creating a new “unreasonable standard,” among other things.

All three bills passed both chambers of the General Assembly and are expected to be signed by the Governor soon. Housing & Community Development Secretary Jake Day recently spoke with WBAL’s Jayne Miller about the affordable housing package and possible plans for future legislation.
