The Maryland Association of Boards of Education (MABE) has selected Joseph “Joe” Goetz as its next Executive Director, bringing a former local school
board president and longtime education advocate into a key statewide leadership role.
Goetz will begin on April 27, leading the association that represents all 24 Maryland public school systems.
For counties and school systems alike, the role carries significance. MABE plays a central role in school board governance, public education advocacy, and statewide policy conversations, particularly as local boards continue to navigate the implementation of major initiatives like the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future.
More About Joseph Geotz
Goetz previously served for eight years on the Kent County Board of Education, including as board president, and has been active with MABE for nearly a decade.
His prior involvement with the organization includes:
- serving as MABE President in 2023
- chairing MABE’s Ad Hoc Committee on the Blueprint
- serving on the Budget Committee
- acting as a Trustee of MABE’s Group Insurance Pool
He also brings private-sector leadership experience, including work overseeing operations, budgets, and stakeholder relationships.
Shaping MABE for the Future
According to MABE, Goetz plans to focus on:
- strengthening the organization’s advocacy work
- expanding professional learning opportunities for school board members
- supporting local boards as their needs evolve
- helping school systems navigate cost pressures, including health care expenses
He has also indicated he intends to spend significant time working directly with school board members in their home counties.
“MABE has played a central role in my public service journey, making me genuinely excited to help lead the association into its next chapter,” Goetz noted. “By serving MABE member school systems as well as our team is able, we help further MABE’s collective vision of serving as a champion for excellence in public education for all Maryland students. This vision, coupled with school board members’ dedicated efforts throughout our state, truly affect so many students, their families, and their communities. I’m so honored to be a part of their collective efforts.”
