Fun Fact: Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow!

Maryland has experienced its fair share of major snowstorms over the year.  Was this latest one that hit Sunday, one of the biggest in recent history?

The recent winter storm hit the East Coast hard, with much of Maryland seeing between 3 and 12 inches of snow, depending on location. Freezing rain added to the impact, coating roads, trees, and sidewalks in ice and making snow removal especially challenging. While the storm was significant, it does not rank as Maryland’s largest on record. Here’s a look back at some of the most memorable snowstorms in the state’s history according to Preservation Maryland.

One of the earliest and most famous was the Blizzard of 1888. This was considered one of the most notorious winter storms in U.S. history. Although Maryland avoided the worst of the storm, coastal areas still experienced heavy snow and fierce winds. Transportation and communication systems were severely disrupted, and the storm ultimately helped spur advancements in weather forecasting and emergency response.

The Knickerbocker Storm of 1922 left a tragic mark on the region. Parts of Maryland received more than 20 inches of snow, much of it heavy and wet. The weight of the snow caused widespread structural damage, including the collapse of the Knickerbocker Theatre in Washington, D.C., from which the storm was named after.

In 1993, the Storm of the Century blanketed Maryland with 15 to 25 inches of snow. The storm brought not only heavy snowfall but also powerful winds, bitter cold, and even rare thundersnow, impacting much of the Eastern United States.

More recently, Snowmageddon in 2010 became infamous for dumping more than two feet of snow across parts of Maryland, disrupting communities and shutting down much of the state for days.

Then came the Blizzard of 2016, which delivered more than 29 inches of snow in Baltimore, ranking among the city’s largest snowfalls on record.

While this year’s storm may not top the list, it marks Maryland’s first major snowfall of the season and will certainly be remembered as another notable winter storm in Maryland’s history.
