The Maryland Department of Planning (MDP) is presenting a webinar titled “Implementing Sustainable Growth: Maryland’s Place Principle in Action.”
Panelists will discuss how they incorporate placemaking into their work and implement a sense of place in their communities. MDP will be joined by local placemaking partners from the Montgomery County Planning Department and Oregon State University. Panelists will discuss Maryland’s new Sustainable Growth Place Principles, establishing place in comprehensive plans, and implementing place through their work. Emphasizing best practices and research from the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, planning, development, and ecology, panelists will also explore how sustainable urban design can be used to enhance a variety of community places.

Attendees will learn how to:
- translate the Place Principle into actionable strategies that build stronger, more connected, and sustainable communities across Maryland,
- apply the Place Principle to local comprehensive plans, small area plans, design, and funding decisions to advance sustainability, equity, and climate resilience in their own communities,
- engage with community members to participate in the creative placemaking process, and
- identify opportunities for placemaking, implement sustainable urban design a climate resilience through intentional design, programming of spaces, and community stewardship of public spaces.
