Prince George’s County Moves to Support Federal Workers During Shutdown

Federal workers play a major role in Maryland’s economy, but they’re often the first to face uncertainty during shutdowns. A new proposal in Prince George’s County aims to provide a local safety net.

On October 7, the Prince George’s County Council held a public hearing and final vote on CB-24-2025, the Federal Worker Emergency Assistance Act, proposed by Council Member Wala Blegay. The resolution and bill aims to provide local relief and stability for the thousands of federal employees and contractors who live in the county, many of whom are directly affected by federal government shutdowns and furloughs.

Prince George’s County is home to more than 65,000 federal workers, among the highest concentrations in the nation. Given Maryland’s position as one of the states most impacted by federal workforce disruptions, county leaders are looking to proactively cushion the blow of potential federal shutdowns.

As previously covered by MACo, Prince George’s County leaders are moving quickly to support residents caught in the fallout. This legislation creates a comprehensive local safety net to help laid-off federal workers maintain financial stability and transition into new employment opportunities.

From the release:

As the county with the highest number of impacted federal workers, Prince George’s must lead in supporting these families during times of uncertainty. This legislation makes clear that we stand with our workers and are ready to provide real resources and opportunities when they are needed most, said Council Member Blegay.

From the release, the legislation provides:

• Priority hiring for laid-off federal employees for county government positions

• Incentives for local businesses that employ displaced federal workers

• Expanded food assistance programs to help families in need
