Heritage Days Weekend is a great way to celebrate and learn more about Montgomery County, Maryland. The free event will feature over 30 historical, cultural, and outdoor recreation sites across the county.
Hosted by Heritage Montgomery, the 26th Annual Heritage Days Weekend will kick off June 28-29. Heritage Days offers something for everyone including museum tours, exhibits, demonstrations, biking and hiking tours, arts and crafts and live music.
“Heritage Days is the perfect opportunity for visitors and residents to explore a selection of Montgomery County’s historic sites that are not regularly open to the public,” Visit Montgomery President and CEO Kelly Groff explains.
Some of the sites and events visitors can enjoy are:
- Seneca Schoolhouse Museum, a restored 1880s one-room schoolhouse
- Woodend Nature Sanctuary to learn about the natural habitats that are located among the quickly urbanizing region.
- Sandy Spring Museum for a Bluegrass Jam, and History Happy Hour
- Josiah Henson Museum & Park to learn about the life of Rev. Josiah Henson, formerly enslaved on the Riley plantation
- Glen Echo Park and its history as a National Chautauqua Assembly, which taught the literatures, arts, and sciences. Now, it’s one of the liveliest visual and performing arts sites in the area.
- Latvian Museum learn how to dye eggs with natural colors. Guests can watch cheese-making and admire clothing, jewelry, and more.
- Oakley Cabin African American Museum & Park, another restored log cabin. Meet historical characters from the past with storytelling, hands-on activities, and live music.
- Woodlawn Manor Cultural Park, explore exhibits in this 1832 stone barn that highlights the local agricultural, Quakers and African American history
There are many more family-friendly sites and activities highlighting local history, culture, and nature and is a great chance for history buffs, art enthusiasts, and anyone else to take some time to appreciate one of 13 heritage areas in the State of Maryland.
