Governor Moore Appoints Travis Nelson To Lead Homeland Security Office

Governor Wes Moore has appointed Travis Nelson as the Director of the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security, elevating a long-time public safety professional with deep experience across multiple emergency response disciplines.

Nelson, who has served as acting director since January, will officially assume the role on Tuesday, June 11.

“Travis is a true public servant in every sense of the word, and I am grateful he has continued to raise his hand to protect and defend the people of Maryland,” said Governor Moore.

The Governor’s Office of Homeland Security, established in 2003, plays a central role in assessing Maryland’s preparedness, advising the governor on public safety and homeland security issues, and coordinating efforts across all levels of government to prevent and respond to emergencies.

Nelson began his public safety career more than 20 years ago in Kent and Queen Anne’s counties, where he served as an emergency communications specialist, public safety dispatcher, and emergency medical technician. A life member of the Kent and Queen Anne’s Rescue Squad, he went on to spend 19 years with the Maryland State Police.

His experience includes serving as a trooper, coordinating complex incidents, and providing high-level leadership in emergency response. He most recently led the Complex Operations Management Unit, overseeing planning for major public events and managing critical incidents across the state.
