Public Health Commission’s Interim Report Sets Stage for Final Recommendations

Maryland’s Commission on Public Health has released its Interim Report, and final recommendations are due this fall.

Earlier this year, the Maryland Commission on Public Health released its 2024 Interim Report—a key milestone in Maryland’s ongoing efforts to strengthen and modernize our state and local public health systems. While the report was published in January, its findings and the work ahead remain highly relevant as the Commission moves toward developing final recommendations due this fall.

The Interim Report reflects a year’s worth of work by the Commission and its five specialized workgroups, all focused on evaluating the delivery of foundational public health services across Maryland. With participation from local health officers, academic institutions, and community leaders, the Commission has identified strengths to build upon and opportunities to advance system-wide improvements.

“The report describes the groundwork already completed as the Commission now transitions to making recommendations for improving public health services for Marylanders. Our future success relies on advancing health equity, improving system efficiency, and addressing the unique needs of our local communities, said Dr. Meena Brewster, Commission co-chair and St. Mary’s County Health Officer.”

Looking ahead, the Commission plans to release draft recommendations for public comment in July 2025. That means now is a critical time to stay informed and engaged. County governments and local health departments are vital partners in delivering public health services, and the Commission’s work could directly influence how those responsibilities and resources are structured in the future.

MACo continues to monitor the Commission’s work closely, advocating for a strong, well-funded, and flexible local public health system that reflects the needs of diverse Maryland communities.

The Commission’s final report is due to the Governor and General Assembly by October 1, 2025. MACo encourages counties to review the Interim Report and prepare to weigh in when draft recommendations are released later this year.
