Snowballs originated as a Baltimore tradition in the 1800s and became known during the Great Depression as “penny sundaes” or “hard-time sundaes.” Today, they are a beloved treat found throughout central Maryland and across the state. While similar to snow cones or shave ice in other regions, Maryland’s version is most often referred to as a snowball. Made from shaved or finely chopped ice topped with sweet flavorings, these refreshing treats are especially popular during the hot summer months.
Across Maryland, snowballs vary in style and flavor depending on the region. In Western Maryland, they’re known as “lollipops.” These unique treats begin with a base of flavored shaved ice, similar to a traditional snowball, but with a twist—layers of sweet, soft-serve ice cream are added. Typically served in four layers—snow, cream, snow, and cream—each “lollipop” is crowned with a swirling tower of soft-serve, making it a one-of-a-kind indulgence.
Although not the snowballs we normally see in winter, these sweet treats are something to look forward to when it warms up in spring and summer.
