What began as a Chesapeake tradition to celebrate the season has grown into a custom across Maryland’s Eastern Shore—the Crab Basket Christmas Tree. This unique tree, constructed from bushel baskets used in crabbing, honors Bay culture and the hardworking men and women who depend on its waters. Many trees feature over 200 baskets, adorned with crab buoys as ornaments and painted designs of workboats, lighthouses, crabs, waterfowl, snowmen, and more. After the holiday season, the trees are taken down in January, and the baskets return to their original purpose for the crabbing season.

In some counties, the preparations for Crab Basket Christmas Trees begin as early as October and November, long before the trees are built and lit. It’s a true community effort, bringing together schools, local organizations, and families. The painted basket designs often hold deep meaning, honoring the lives and legacies of both active and past watermen, as well as those who have passed away, making the tradition a heartfelt tribute to Maryland’s maritime heritage.

Several counties in Maryland will showcase these unique Crab Basket Christmas Trees, including Dorchester County, Queen Anne’s County, Kent County, and Talbot County. Each tree reflects the region’s rich maritime heritage and the community’s pride in celebrating their culture.
