Governor Moore’s office announced the appointment of Yvonne Briley-Wilson as the Acting Correctional Ombudsman to oversee the welfare of incarcerated individuals in state facilities.
In alignment with SB 134 from the 2024 legislative session, Governor Moore announced the appointment of Yvonne Briley-Wilson as Acting Correctional Ombudsman of the newly established Office of Correctional Ombudsman. During the previous session, the office was established as an independent and impartial oversight entity for the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services and the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services. They have the authority to conduct investigations and reviews to ensure the integrity of operations in order to help minimize risks to the health, safety, and welfare of incarcerated individuals. The new office can also refer investigations for criminal charges if the investigations uncover illegal acts.
Briley-Wilson will be recommended to the Senate for confirmation during the upcoming 2025 legislative session.
