Local Govts Can Benefit From Whole-of-State Cybersecurity

Whole-of-state cybersecurity is changing how local governments defend against cyber threats, providing vital resources and support through statewide collaboration and federal funding.

In today’s digital age, even small towns and rural counties face the growing threat of cyberattacks. Many communities often lack the resources and expertise to defend against cybercriminals.  “Whole-of-state” (WOS) cybersecurity, a team-based approach, is supported by federal funding to help equip local governments to build their defenses.

As previously reported by MACo, SLCGP funding is available to state and local governments to address cybersecurity risks and threats to information systems. WOS efforts drive states to offer targeted assistance to smaller agencies in improving their cyber defenses. This collaborative approach to cybersecurity includes contributions from major state agencies to individual local IT staff.

While state guidance and support are crucial, each community faces unique challenges, requiring tailored solutions rather than a one-size-fits-all policy. By allowing local agencies to adapt state resources to their specific needs, WOS efforts ensure that cybersecurity measures are effective and practical for every locality, regardless of size or infrastructure.

“You can’t have the state dictating policy to all local governments. Things are so unique that no one size fits all. The state has to work with a lot of flexibility,” said Kent Kroft, the CIO of Tippecanoe County in Indiana.

WOS efforts offer a much-needed lifeline for small towns and counties in the ever-evolving cybersecurity landscape. By sharing resources, knowledge, and funding, these programs are helping local governments protect their digital assets and ensure a safer future.
