The Maryland State Board of Elections (SBE) is warning voters about texting scams that spread false information about the 2024 general election.
Some registered Maryland voters have reported receiving false text messages claiming they are not registered and directing them to click a link unrelated to SBE. The text reads:
“URGENT: To vote in the upcoming election, you MUST be registered, but public records show you’re not registered at [voter address]. Click the link to register before the deadline: md-voter.link/4VczM
Reply Stop to end. AC.”
“Election scams directly threaten the integrity of the election process. These schemes aim to steal identities, create distrust in election administration, and undermine confidence,” said SBE State Administrator Jared DeMarinis. “With the rise of election-related scams and misinformation nationwide, Marylanders are encouraged to stay vigilant regarding any election-related communications by phone, mail, or email.
SBE reminds voters that its official text messages are sent from (833) 572-1128 and will only contain links to “.gov” websites. The board will never request personal information via text.
“To verify voter registration or find information about the 2024 general election, residents should only visit the official SBE website, http://www.elections.maryland.gov, a trusted resource for updates on voter registration, polling locations, mail-in ballots, and voting options,” DeMarinis said. SBE also provides timely updates through its social media channels.”
Additionally, SBE has established a portal for residents to report election disinformation. To submit a report, visit the Disinformation Portal.
