Montgomery County Announces AI Action Plan

Montgomery County recently unveiled an AI Action Plan to enhance public services.

The AI Action Plan is a comprehensive strategy to enhance public services through artificial intelligence (AI). Led by the Department of Technology and Enterprise Business Solutions (TEBS), this plan emphasizes the County’s commitment to using AI responsibly, ethically, and equitably to benefit residents. Key initiatives include the creation of an Artificial Intelligence Center of Excellence (AICOE) to oversee AI projects, an upgrade to the MC311 chatbot (“Monty 2.0”) to improve resident interactions, and efforts to secure and update data for greater accuracy and safety. The County is also collaborating with academic institutions and other jurisdictions to research and implement best practices for AI usage.

From the press release:

“This plan, led by the Department of Technology and Enterprise Business Solutions, demonstrates our unwavering commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology in a responsible, ethical and equitable manner. By leveraging AI responsibly, we aim to improve public services and drive innovation throughout our community. I encourage residents to engage with us, provide feedback and help shape the future of AI-enabled public services in the County.” – Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich

Montgomery County’s AI Action Plan outlines a structured approach to integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into its operations. The plan is organized into four key areas:

  1. AI Strategy: AICOE will create a framework to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and automate tasks.
  2. Structure and Staffing: AICOE will define roles and responsibilities to effectively manage AI projects.
  3. Governance: AICOE will implement policies to manage AI risks and protect data integrity.
  4. Partnerships: AICOE will collaborate with experts, hire new talent, and partner with departments and vendors.
