Governor Moore Announces Initiative to Expand Apprenticeships

Governor Wes Moore has unveiled a significant boost for Maryland’s workforce, announcing nearly $23 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Apprenticeship Building America initiative.

Recently, Governor Moore announced $23 Million in federal funding to expand registered apprentices and workforce development in Maryland. This investment will connect over 7,000 jobseekers to new apprenticeship opportunities across the state, focusing on recruiting underrepresented groups. By supporting local industries through a well-trained, diverse workforce, counties can foster economic growth, reduce unemployment, and increase residents’ access to well-paying jobs. These programs directly contribute to the development of local talent, helping attract and retain businesses that rely on skilled labor.

From the press release:

“In Maryland, we believe in tested programs that deliver results. Registered apprenticeships have helped us train and retain skilled workers for decades – and will help make Maryland more competitive for decades to come.” – Governor Wes Moore.

The funding will support various Maryland organizations in expanding their apprenticeship programs, particularly in key healthcare, technology, and transportation industries. The grants will also help align educational standards with apprenticeship programs and establish apprenticeship hubs to create robust partnership networks.

Among the organizations receiving grants are:

  • University of Maryland Global Campus: Awarded $3.9 million to create a nationally scalable model for IT pre-apprenticeships and registered apprenticeships, enabling participants to earn college credits towards a bachelor’s degree.
  • Baltimore Alliance for Careers in Healthcare Inc.: Granted $3.8 million to establish a healthcare apprenticeship hub, improving access for underrepresented and underserved communities.
  • Asian American Center of Frederick: Received nearly $4 million to develop apprenticeships for immigrants, including minority, LGBTQ, rural, and low-income populations, as well as Deaf or disabled individuals.
  • Joe’s Movement Emporium: Secured over $3.1 million to create apprenticeship programs in media and creative technologies, fostering sustainable, living-wage jobs across multiple sectors.

Additionally, the Maryland Department of Labor recently secured $1,092,175 from the U.S. Department of Labor’s State Apprenticeship Expansion Formula grant program. This funding will enhance the department’s ability to engage with employers, foster local partnerships, and further develop Registered Apprenticeship programs.
