MD’s Job Growth: Twice the National Rate

According to the US Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, Maryland added 5,600 jobs in June, a growth rate of double the national average.

The employment situation in Maryland is continuing to improve since the COVID-19 pandemic. In June 2024, Maryland saw an increase of 5,600 jobs, with 3,900 in the private sector, outpacing the national job growth rate. The state also revised May’s employment numbers upward by 700 jobs. For the first half of 2024, Maryland added 27,800 jobs, making it the fastest-growing state in terms of employment. Workforce is a top of mind issue for all employers, counties included. A qualified and skilled workforce attracts businesses, fosters innovation, and ensures sustainable economic development which are all key to the vitality and growth of a local economy.

Interesting statewide employment trends from the MD Department of Labor:

  • The labor force grew by 6,400 workers in June, raising the participation rate to 65.4%, higher than the national rate of 62.6%.
  • However, the unemployment rate slightly increased to 2.8% due to more people entering the job market.
  • Since the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, the Transportation, Warehousing, and Utilities sector lost 1,800 jobs, though not all losses may be attributed to the bridge collapse.
  • Job growth was strongest in Government, Professional Services, Construction, Retail Trade, and Wholesale Trade.
  • Conversely, Accommodation and Food Services, Private Educational Services, and Information sectors experienced job losses.
