Speaker Jones Announces New Committee Assignments and Subcommittee Chairs

As previously reported on Conduit Street, following a nomination from the Montgomery County Democratic Central Committee (MCDCC), Governor Wes Moore appointed former Delegate Sara Love to fill the vacant District 16 Senate seat.

Love previously served on the House Environment and Transportation Committee, where she chaired the Land Use and Ethics Subcommittee. Love had also represented the House of Delegates on the Chesapeake Bay Commission.

In response to Love’s departure, House Speaker Adrienne Jones announced several committee reassignments and appointments:

Delegate Robbyn Lewis has transitioned from the House Health and Government Operations Committee to the Environment and Transportation Committee, where she will now chair the Land Use and Ethics Subcommittee.

Delegate Vaughn Stewart will be the new chair of the House Environment and Transportation Committee’s Motor Vehicle and Transportation Subcommittee. Delegate Stewart currently chairs the Land Use and Ethics Subcommittee.

Delegate Sheila Ruth has been appointed to the Chesapeake Bay Commission, joining Delegate Julian Ivey in representing the House of Delegates on the tri-state legislative assembly, which serves as a policy leader in the restoration of the Chesapeake Bay.

Senator Love succeeds former Senator Ariana Kelly, who stepped down earlier this year when she became the executive director of the Maryland Commission for Women. Accordingly, efforts are underway to fill the District 16 House seat vacated by Love.

By authority of Article III, Section 13 of the Constitution of Maryland, the MCDCC must nominate a person to fill this vacancy within thirty days and submit the nominee’s name to the governor. To meet this deadline, the MCDCC will hold a nomination meeting on July 11, with the nominee’s name to be submitted by July 13.
