MD Ranks in Top Ten States for Fatalities Caused by Running Red Lights

More data shows traffic safety is a concern in Maryland, with red light violations significantly above the national average. 

As previously covered on Conduit Street, roadway safety in Maryland has been a concern for residents and legislators alike. From that article a recent report shared that 2023 was one of the deadliest years on the Maryland roadways in two decades. Additional data from the U.S. Department of Transportation shows Maryland is also in the top ten states for crashes caused by drivers running through red lights.

A chart from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) below shows the total number of fatal crashes between 2018 – 2022, with those caused by running a red light filtered out to get the final state-by-state ranking.
