Elfreth Wins Crowded Democratic Primary for Maryland’s 3rd Congressional District

Maryland State Senator Sarah Elfreth Sarah Elfreth won a crowded Democratic primary race on Tuesday in Maryland’s Third Congressional District. Elfreth, 35, is the youngest woman ever elected to Maryland’s State Senate and emerged from a field of more than 20 Democrats vying to succeed Representative John Sarbanes, who announced last year that after nine terms, he would not seek re-election.

According to unofficial results from the Maryland State Board of Elections, Senator Elfreth emerged from a field of 22 candidates with 35 percent of the vote in the highly competitive primary race.

Senator Elfreth has represented Annapolis and Southern Anne Arundel County since 2018. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Towson University and holds a master’s degree in Public Policy from Johns Hopkins University. Before her time in the Maryland Senate, she served as the director of government affairs for the National Aquarium and as director of University Projects for Margrave Strategies, where she focused on economic development in university towns.

Senator Elfreth will face Republican Robert Steinberger in the November general election.
