Alsobrooks Wins Primary for Open US Senate Seat, Will Face Hogan In November

Prince George’s County Executive and MACo Board Member Angela Alsobrooks prevailed in the Democratic primary race to succeed US Senator Ben Cardin, who announced he would retire at the end of his third term representing Maryland in the United States Senate. County Executive Alsobrooks will face former two-term Maryland governor Larry Hogan in the November general election.

According to unofficial results from the Maryland State Board of Elections, Alsobrooks earned 54 percent of the vote to earn the Democratic nomination for Maryland’s open US Senate seat. Meanwhile, Larry Hogan won the Republican primary race with 62 percent of the vote.

In 2018, Alsobrooks was elected Prince George’s County Executive, the first woman to hold the position and the first Black woman elected to the office of County Executive in Maryland history. Before that, Alsobrooks held various roles in county government before making history as the youngest and first woman elected Prince George’s County State’s Attorney.

In 2014, Larry Hogan became only the second Republican Governor elected in Maryland in 50 years. Governor Hogan was overwhelmingly re-elected to a second term in 2018, making him only the second Republican to do so in the entire history of the state.
