Early Voting Starts This Week: Here’s What You Need to Know

An essential function of Maryland’s county governments is to fund and oversee elections — overseeing polling places and coordinating poll workers every two years. While Primary Election Day is on Tuesday, May 14, mail-in voting is underway, and early voting begins Thursday, May 2, and will last a week.

Registered voters can vote in three ways in the 2024 Presidential primary election: early in person at select locations, mail-in ballot, or in person on election day at their designated polling place.

Vote Early In-Person: In-person early voting begins Thursday, May 2, and ends Thursday, May 9. Maryland has 97 early voting centers, including at least one in every county. Voters can vote at any early voting location in their home county.

Early voting centers are open from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm. Voters in line by 8:00 pm can cast their vote. A list of early voting locations is available online (Spanish version). Please note that some places have been changed or added since the last election.

Anyone registered to vote can vote during the early voting period. Anyone eligible to register to vote can vote during early voting. Registered voters have always been able to vote during early voting, but now, individuals who are eligible but not yet registered can register and vote.

Mail-In Voting: Requests for a mail-in ballot via mail or fax must be received (not just mailed) or submitted online by Tuesday, May 7. Individuals requesting a mail-in ballot via email must submit it by 11:59 pm on Friday, May 10. Learn how to request a mail-in ballot online.

Mail-in ballots returned by mail must be postmarked by or before 8:00 pm on Tuesday, May 14. If returned by hand, ballots must be dropped at a ballot drop box or local board of elections by 8:00 pm on Primary Election Day, Tuesday, May 14.

Vote in Person on Primary Election Day: The final day to cast a ballot is Primary Election Day, Tuesday, May 14. Polls are open from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm. Voters who are in line by 8:00 pm can cast their vote. A list of Election Day polling places is available online (Spanish version).

Ballot Drop Boxes: The State Board of Elections has installed 286 ballot drop boxes in all counties and the City of Baltimore. A list of locations is available online. Voters may submit their completed mail-in ballots at any official drop box until Primary Election Day, Tuesday, May 14, at 8:00 pm.
