Before the colonial era, this region of Worcester County was inhabited by the Assateague and Pocomoke Native Americans. Subsequently, it became part of the Burley Plantation, a 300-acre land grant established in 1677. Over time, a path evolved into the Philadelphia Post Road, linking the north and west. Settlement in the area began, leading to the development of a small town. Despite its origins dating back to the 1790s, the town wasn’t officially incorporated until 1868, following the Civil War. Its growth continued, and eventually started attracting tourists.

Berlin boasts numerous individual structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places, showcasing nearly two centuries of architectural heritage. The town’s charming small-town ambiance, characterized by its welcoming Main Street and distinctive architecture, attracted filmmakers, leading to its selection as the backdrop for two major films: “Runaway Bride” in 1998 and “Tuck Everlasting” in 2001.

Today, Berlin’s location within Worcester County renders it an ideal destination for tourists seeking diverse activities both within the town and its surroundings.
