Baltimore City and Prince George’s County have received nearly $3.7 million and $3.5 million respectively in federal funding to help end youth homelessness.

The awards were part of a $75 million U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) program which funded 23 jurisdictions nationwide.

HUD’s Youth Homelessness Demonstration Program (YHDP) will help these communities to build local systems and will support a wide range of housing programs including rapid rehousing, permanent supportive housing, transitional housing, and host homes. This year’s funding level is significantly higher than the $43 million awarded last year.

The Baltimore Sun reports on how Baltimore City will use the funds:

The new federal money will flow over two years to Mayor Bernard C. “Jack” Young’s office of homeless services, which he recently elevated in stature by having its leader serve as a member of his Cabinet. The grant will span two years and will initially be used to craft a data-backed plan to address homelessness.
